Message from the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs
Words cannot express our grief and sadness over the senseless shooting in Las Vegas last night, Oct. 1. That a single person could bring upon Las Vegas such destruction and sadness – such stark contrast to what the city stands for – is unthinkable. We offer our humble condolences to the victims of this terrible crime, and to those whose lives are forever changed by this act. We offer our support to the local businesses that make their livelihoods from tourism. We know that Las Vegas will shine again, but for now we mourn the tragedy it has endured in this dark time. Helpful information for Las Vegas Mandalay shooting victims Ways to mark yourself as safe after the Las Vegas Mandalay shooting: FACEBOOK SAFETY CHECK Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature after 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on a Las Vegas music festival, killing at least 58 and injuring more than 500, on October 1. If you’re in Las Vegas, and you’re ok, you can let your loved ones know by “marking yourself safe” on Facebook here. Safety Check, part of Facebook’s Crisis Response center, allows Facebook users to mark themselves as safe in times of disaster, or check the statuses of their friends and family. Safety Check is activated after multiple people post about an emergency situation in a given geographic area. Here’s how it works:
- Facebook activates Safety Check, notifying people who may be impacted based on the city listed in your profile, your current location (if you give Facebook access to it), or other signals, such as your city where you use the Internet.
- You’ll be prompted to go to Safety Check to let your friends know you’re safe.
- You can see which friends have marked themselves safe and invite more friends to go to Safety Check and find or give help.
